Baggy pants, oversized tees, clashing prints, chunky sneakers, bold jewellery…these have become staples of Billie’s fashion style.

But Billie’s style has changed a lot over the years. At the September 2016 Teen Vogue Young Hollywood party, she looked pretty much like a regular teenager. But as her fame grew, so did her desire to make a statement with her outfit choices.

Her bold fashion choices over the years have drawn both praise and criticisms, but one thing is for sure – Billie won’t let anything or anybody change her. No doubt, her unusual fashion style probably has something to do with the way she was raised.
Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell was born on December 18, 2001 in Los Angeles, California and grew up in Highland Park, one of the most diverse neighborhoods of LA. In an interview with NME, Billie said “People just have a different vision of how I was raised and that’s not correct. They think I’m just a little rich girl from LA.”

Billie’s upbringing in Highland Park was quite unconventional. I mean, the fact that the whole family slept in a four-person bed until Billie’s brother Finneas turned 10 says it all. Oh, and let’s not forget that Billie’s parents gave her the middle name Pirate!

Born into a family of two TV actors, Billie was encouraged to pursue her artistic talents from a young age. She started singing in the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus and taught herself how to play the piano and ukulele when she was just a kid.

Billie’s parents Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell home-schooled both of their children and raised them vegetarian. Patrick, the former soap opera actor who starred in Guiding Light in 1989 was the one who suggested keeping Billie and Finneas away from traditional schooling because he believed being home-schooled would give them more time and freedom to explore their creative talents. Well, I think we should all thank Billie’s dad because if it wasn’t for all that free time Billie and her brother had at home, the singer may never have become the star she is now.
At 11 years old, Billie became obsessed with the horror zombie show “The Walking Dead” which inspired her to write her first song “Fingers Crossed” which features lyrics “In the end, when they’re all gone/When the world is silent and the days are long/Just you and I, we’ll be alive/We made it on our own.”

Did I mention she was 11 when she wrote these lines?
Although she grew up in a loving and supporting family, Billie had to overcome a lot of struggles before she could share her talent with the world. She struggled with Tourette’s syndrome, depression, self-harm, and even contemplated suicide ate one point.

Luckily, Billie found comfort in music and recorded her first song “Ocean Eyes” when she was just 13. It was Billie’s brother Finneas who wrote the single for his band, but ultimately gave it to Billie because he thought her unique voice would fit the song better.
The track became an overnight success and turned Billie into a worldwide sensation – and fashion icon. Thanks, Finneas!
